Set Review - Squirrel's Tree House 41017

When it comes to polybags, I'm a sucker.  So when LEGO released three new Friends polybags that came with new animals for US$4.99 each, there was only one thing to do.  Open up the wallet and kiss them greenbacks goodbye.

Speaking of which, have you noticed what these polys say up in the corner?  Series 1.  That means we'll have at least two more series, maybe more.  Slow death.

None of the pieces in the set are extraordinary except for the new squirrel mold.  Some Bricklinkers say he has green eyes, some say he has blue.  But if you check at around midnight, you'll find that they really are a glowy red sort of color.  Best to leave a bag of shelled almonds and back away.

I challenged my 4 and 6 year old daughters to build it without using the instructions.  At first they were upset but got the hang of it.  The one bit that wasn't immediately obvious was the setup of the window piece at the back of the tree house.  We cracked open the instructions to get that bit sorted.

If you do open the instructions, you'll find encouragement to visit the Friends portion of the LEGO website.  There are bonus instructions for an alternate build or combining parts from (spoiler alert!) all three sets to build some sort of squirrel throne with turtle servant and kitty butler.  Meh.

LEGO seems to have become very generous with their extra parts recently.  There are not one but TWO each of the round plates which means that little Mr. Squirrel can have his nut ration doubled.  New to the extras lineup is a 1x2 tile and a 1x2 grill tile (called heater vents by my CFOLs).  There are 2 extra ribbons and flowers as well.  Including extras there are a total of 52 pieces.

In all the build is fairly solid and withstands play by the target audience well.  Somehow LEGO misjudged their extra parts as what went missing after a couple of days was the dish.  Add that one to the wanted list for my next order.

Recommendation:  Buy one.  Per kid.  Under 5 bucks is a great price for a bunch of parts and a rodent made of ABS.  If LEGO keeps this price point for series 2 and 3 then they will likely not stay on the shelves.  I'll have to double check that the next time I'm getting my LEGO fix.
