Set Review - Rapunzel's Market Visit 30116

For a while this was a hot set on the aftermarket.  It was some sort of Target freebie I believe.  But now that the hype is over you can spend a mere $3.99 and get your own Friends Disney Princess polybag.  I wasn't that hyped up about it.

For starters, this is not exactly a unique set.  If you look at from the perspective of a girl and a street cart then this is old news.  First there was 30105, then 30106.  Then 30112 and 3011341027 is a little larger but still a small entry set.  Despite all these sets it's still essentially flowers and sweets.  Call the whole line sexist if you will but apparently TLG believes that girls should be street vendors.

Maybe we could look at it from a parts perspective.  There are a couple of great standouts here.  One is Rapunzel's hair.  I checked this set out on Bricklink where the minifig inventory is listed with 3 bows.  That must be a mistake.  The extras aren't supposed to be a part of the inventory!  Then I got a nice surprise when I assembled Rapunzel.  Her hair does indeed have 3 little holes for bows.  Well that's rather exciting.  All sorts of possibilities are opened up here.  It doesn't increase the ability to use any specific pieces, but it does increase the quantity of those pieces that can be used.  It could also make for a dramatic burning hair fig.

The other neat part is the D-basket slash old school backpack in straight up blue.  Not medium azure or bright light blue or turqiwinkle.  Blue.  Period.  Nice.  First time in a primary color.

I'm not sure what the pretense of this set is.  Does Rapunzel visit the market or is she the peddler?  Why is there only one bouquet and one croissant for sale?  Is this the end of the day?  Is the croissant stale?  Is there anything else for sale?

This set comes with 5 extras including 2 bows (1 in each color), a dark pink flower head, pearl gold telescope, and a green plant stem.  That's enough to create a second bouquet and maybe offer a telescope or some hair pretties for sale as well.  And if that doesn't round out this peddler's merchandise, then maybe he could hit the jackpot by selling his cart as well.
