LEGO Techniques - Bring Down The Gavel

Court is in session!  The honorable judge is now presiding. *whack!*  When the judge collectible minifigure came out I couldn't care less about the robe or new hairdo.  What really grabbed my eye was his little handheld accessory, the gavel.

It's obvious that the handle is a 3.2mm bar.  The odd part is that the bar is a little less than 14mm in length.  This does not readily equate to any typical system dimension.  However the tip of the bar is exactly 16mm from the center of the gavel itself.  This is exactly 2 studs in length.

Then there's the meat of the gavel.  It has a diameter of 5mm, slightly larger than a 4.8mm knob.  So there will be no using it inside tubes or any other anti-stud sized void.  The length of the gavel is right at 11mm which is again outside the typical system.  So of what use is this legal tenderizer?

Here's the amazing thing.  That slightly larger than a stud, slightly wider than a plate round block has tapered ends.  And those tapers are about 1.5mm in length meaning that the portion of the gavel block that is full sized is 8mm wide.  Now we are getting somewhere!  It still may not fit into an anti-stud but it will rest nicely in there.  As well as another one 2 studs away.  (Not a gap of 2 studs between them, but two studs as in one stud gap away).

Look familiar?

The fit is not exceedingly tight and there is a lot of play in the connection.  It does stay though.  This would certainly not be appropriate for a structural connection but definitely useful for a purposefully wobbly one.  If the connection point is pinched just a touch then the bar end can be posed at will without any unsightly sag.

I'm down.
I'm up!
Of course with that bar end the potential is almost endless.  The brown and textures makes me think Steampunk, assuming that genre isn't completely worn out by now.  Maybe some castle?  I'd love to see what you come up with.  Feel free to link to your gavel based creations in the comments below.
