We presented our items to the cashier and I mentioned the deal. She said it was one of their better ones. Sure enough, I was asked to pay $4.99 for the two polybags. Done and done. "Now run girls, before they change their mind!"
First thoughts: What is this and why would Spidey ever need one? Usually he just gets around by slinging webs on to tall buildings. Perhaps this is his rural mode of transport. When there just aren't enough barns and silos and cropdusters to cling to and running isn't fast enough. So unless there's something in a past or future movie I'm missing this seems to be a superfluous set. Even Google was flummoxed.
In that case, this review will be based on the merits of the set as a stand-alone play thing, not based on any licensing. Of course, the unshakeable flick-fires are here. This time they've got solid white Bionicle eyes on them which given the context makes them look like giant egg sacs. And then there are some bizarre claws on the bottom of the rig. Could this possibly have been stolen from Doc Ock and then repainted? Also the pointless windshield. It's tiny and much lower than any sort of windshield function, yet it's still trans-black.
Then it struck me. This must be some sort of microfighter thing ala the Star Wars sets. We're cool now.
Two other interesting points that lean (sort of) towards the positive. First, this flying wing has a raked back look, meaning the leading edge of the wing is straight across while the rear has the angle. The weird thing on this is that the little end flaps are raked forward giving it sort of an edgy but somewhat broken look. Just my opinion. The other interesting piece is that the rear end appears to have the same sort of thruster that we've seen on the SSPE and the awful Bat Tumbler. At least something about that set was memorable.
Since you can swing this for free, go for it. I don't give it very high marks but it is a good way to get the aftermarket $5 fig for next to nothing plus a bunch of parts. So long as you like to work in red and blue. And wheels without tires. Maybe ditch the red and go for classic space?
More spidey, perhaps?
