The magazine is very well done. The binding does not fall apart and the pictures are decent quality. Should the $6.50 price tag be a sticking point for you then opt for the free digital copy. Many of the features and activities in the magazine are available for pdf download as well. All in all I think it is a nice gesture for a blogger to go retro to a paper production. Though not in lieu of their site, the magazine material is a little more timeless.
Sure the set is not available anymore from LEGO or one of of its exclusive partners directly. But if you're a strict collectorvist you can find this set on ebay, Amazon, Bricklink or Brick Owl for a few bucks. In fact there seem to be more of these sets than there are buyers right now so if you've been slacking, you slacker you, get thee to a computer and make one of these appear on your door step.
